Nearly 14 years ago, writer Moin Baig suggested the idea for a film about the courtesans of Lahore’s Heeramandi area to filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Heeramandi, which means diamond market in Urdu and Punjabi, is a beautiful area in the city of Lahore, Pakistan. Formerly Shahi Mohallah, a popular Pakistani destination, declined in the British era.
During the Mughal era, women mainly from Afghanistan and Uzbekistan danced, sang, and entertained the emperors. However, Heeramandi became a center of prostitution when the British developed brothels there for the recreation of British soldiers during the British Raj. During this time, Heeramandi lost its prestige and came to be known as a hub for prostitution. Or, in active voice: Prostitution became prevalent in Heeramandi during this time, causing it to lose its prestige.
